Understanding Dreams & Visions
Across various ancient cultures, dreams were considered a means of communication with the divine, supernatural, or gods. For instance Ancient Egyptians had a god of dreams and literature to aid in interpretation. They saw dreams as a way to foretell the future, cure sicknesses and communicate with gods. In sacred texts we see pharaoh having his dream interpreted by Joseph.
In ancient Mesopotamia, dreams were considered extremely important for divination, their kings paid close attention to them. Many Greeks and Romans believed dreams could reveal past, present and future events.
In Ancient Babylon, Professional dream interpreters, often priests or seers, told people the meaning of their dreams and how to avoid evil consequences, this is where we see stories of sacred texts like Daniel interpreting dreams for King Nebuchadnezzar in the book of Daniel.
All ancient societies believed all dreams were oracles, requiring interpretation and had professional dream interpreters.
